“The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love” (Galatians 5:6)

A Little About Me

I am a graduate of Harding University and am working with teenagers in Lawrence County (Mitchell & Bedford), Indiana, with Between the Crowd. I have a wonderful wife (Katelyn) of 14 years, two amazing sons, three dogs, and two cats.

I am an avid reader, a critical movie watcher, and a student of culture. I enjoy hiking, barbell training, writing, and making videos. I’m an Enneagram enthusiast, an “Apple Sheep,” and casual gamer. Most of all, I am a disciple of Christ going into the world to make new disciples.

Questions from the Teens

I asked the teens in my youth group what things they wanted to know about me. These are their questions and my answers.

What’s your middle name?
The N. stands for Nathan.

What would you do if you weren’t a youth minister?
I would honestly consider becoming a high school English teacher or college English professor. I’ve always loved the language arts, and my favorite teachers were my literature teachers.

What’s your best childhood memory?
My parents made traveling a priority (they still do!) when I was a kid. We went on a lot of road trips to see family or to just see different parts of the country. I remember a family road trip up to New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC. We also took a road trip out West to see Yellowstone, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and other stuff. I’m really glad I was able to see those places when I was younger.

Do you like Uplift or Winterfest better?
It’s really hard to compare those two events. They’re just so different, and they each have their pros and cons. Winterfest is great because it’s in Gatlinburg, and there are thousands of people there, and we can take a bigger group on that weekend trip. But overall I think we get more out of Uplift spiritually and socially.

What’s your favorite…
…Band?
It’s hard to say one favorite, so I’ll list several – Weezer, Relient K, Skillet, Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers, Walk Off The Earth, Sleeping at Last, Blink 182, Newfound Glory, MXPX, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, that’s enough for now…

…Animated Disney movie?
It doesn’t get much better than The Lion King, but I also really liked Moana.

…Type of candy?
Coffee Nut M&Ms and Dark Chocolate Reese’s Cups

…Clothing brand?
My style is almost exclusively Gap and Old Navy.

…Color?
Blue, followed by Maroon and Teal – paired with Gray as my neutral base (I think about this a lot…)

…Book?
I’m a huge fan of fantasy novels, and as good as the modern authors are, it’s hard to compete with the series that started it all – The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien.

…Soda?
I don’t drink sodas anymore. The closest I get is a La Croix or something. But when I did drink sodas, I loved Dr. Pepper and A&W Root Beer (or IBC if that was an option).

…Hobby?
I really enjoy hiking/trail running if you consider that a hobby.

…Sports team?
I’d probably have to go with the Green Bay Packers.

Marvel or DC?
Marvel has better movies (obviously), but DC has better TV shows and more intriguing characters. I’m a fan of both.

If you could have the same super power as any Marvel superhero, what would it be?
Honestly, I think Loki has the best overall set of powers. I know he’s not exactly a hero, but the number of things he can do is quite impressive. It would be cool to impersonate others, to cast images of myself elsewhere, to persuade people to do what I want them to (especially other drivers!).
