RESCUE

We have begun a new Wednesday night series based on “I Am a Disciple: A 40-Day Student Discipleship Journal.” Each week our students are encouraged to complete fives days of devotionals and studies in this journal. And each Wednesday we will introduce the new topic for the week.

This week we introduced the topic of RESCUE. The journey of discipleship begins with the recognition that we are all lost children of God in need of rescuing.

Below you will find a link to listen to our class, presentation notes to follow along, and additional video resources.

When In Doubt…

Christian Twitter kind of exploded a few days ago. The popular “Desiring God” account posted this:

I read the linked article, and it has a point to be made. But I don’t think it is possible to have faith without some doubt. The whole point of faith is having that “I could be wrong” feeling, yet trusting anyway. It may sound contradictory, but I believe the enemy of faith is not doubt – it’s certainty. Certainty leaves no room for growth, questioning, exploration, further discovery. Only faith can do that.
Do I ever go through seasons of doubt? Absolutely. I’ve spent countless nights lying in bed wondering if this whole church thing is worth it, if God really called me to this, if the Bible is really telling us the truth, and if Jesus is really worth devoting my life to. How can I know? I can’t. That’s part of it.
Faith is a choice. It fails to be a choice when we can no longer say no, when there is no possibility of being wrong.
The real question is, “Does it make sense for me to choose faith over disbelief?”
Here enters the writer/physician/historian/professor/explorer Luke. By the time Luke writes his gospel account, Mark and Matthew had already written their own (presumably). These gospels and some of Paul’s letters had been making the rounds through the churches. And there were also a plethora of stories being passed along simply by word-of-mouth. And while a few letters or fragments of the gospels carried around by traveling preachers might be enough to convince and convert many people throughout the Roman world, others may not have been so easily persuaded. You know the types – they don’t fall for emotional manipulation or clever story-telling. They want sources cited. They want facts. They want thorough investigative journalists to give an accurate recounting of the events.
And that’s exactly what Luke gives us.

So many others have tried their hand at putting together a story of the wonderful harvest of Scripture and history that took place among us, using reports handed down by the original eyewitnesses who served this Word with their very lives. Since I have investigated all the reports in close detail, starting from the story’s beginning, I decided to write it all out for you, most honorable Theophilus, so you can know beyond the shadow of a doubt the reliability of what you were taught. (Luke 1:1-4 // The Message)

Luke tells us exactly who his audience is – a man named Theophilus (God-Lover), possibly a wealthy patron paying Luke to do this research. Luke tells us exactly how he wrote – through careful investigation, using interviews and other sources. Luke even tells us WHY he wrote – to provide a more ordered account of the events, actions, and teachings of Jesus.

All this is done so that we may know with a greater degree of certainty that the things we’ve been taught about Jesus are actually grounded in reality.

When you are in a season of doubt and discouragement, when you are finding faith difficult to come by, when you are beginning to question if Jesus is even real and if it even still matters today – Luke has written a book just for you.

WHAT IS RELIGION?

Last week in class we tried to answer the question, “What is religion?” Trying to define religion is harder than you may think. What it boils down to is that we may not be able to define it, but we know it when we see it. So in class we explored the nature of religion and why it matters.

Feel free to follow along with the class audio, presentation notes, and video clips below.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

This past week (10/11) we dove into the last of the big five worldview questions: Where Are We Going? Where is all this headed? Are we really going to “hell in a hand basket”? Are we believers just supposed to jump ship? or bide our time until Jesus comes back to destroy everything and take us to heaven?

It’s been said that some people are so heavenly focused that they are no earthly good. This comes from a misunderstanding of what Jesus meant by the Kingdom of Heaven. Our modern misconceptions about heaven/the afterlife/eternal life are more representative of Islam, Buddhism, and even the Greek understanding of Hades/Elysium and present a less than accurate conception of heaven as revealed in the Scriptures.

So buckle up, because we’re all on a trip going somewhere. Click the box below to listen to the audio from class, and follow along with the presentation notes. I’ve added a few more videos than we had time to get to in class. So be sure to check these out, too!

WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

Last week (10/4) we discussed the fourth big worldview question: What’s the Solution? We can all agree that the world is full of problems. We can maybe even agree that there may be one or two main causes to all the other smaller, more specific problems in our lives, like sin, corruption, rebellion against God/the gods, etc.

But have you noticed that we can look at the same problem and come up with completely opposite solutions? And if we can’t even agree on a solution to a specific *lower case problem on our own, then what makes us think that we can even come close to solving The *upper case PROBLEM of sin and death on our own? We must look to something/someone outside of the Problem in order to find a solution. That’s where Jesus comes in.
Feel free to listen to the class audio – there’s a chunk that I cut out for the sake of time and flow – and follow along with the presentation notes & videos.

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

As we dive into the big five worldview questions, we quickly realize that something has gone awry. If God is an all loving, all powerful God who created and sustains the entire universe, AND if humans are made in the image of God, created to be beloved, precious children of the Father, THEN…why is this world so messed up?

Who is God? Who am I? What’s the problem?

Again, these are all questions that every single person on the planet must wrestle with. Every generation must find their own answers to these questions. Every religion and philosophy is an attempt to find answers to these questions. And the problem of pain and suffering is as old as human civilization itself.

So we spent 45 minutes on a Wednesday night in a church basement discussing these very matters. Check out the audio recording, the class notes, and the videos.

What do you think the problem is?

WHO AM I?

This week we took some time to discuss the question “WHO AM I?” We spent some time discussing questions like “What is the purpose of humanity?” and “Are people naturally born good or bad?” You know – simple things like that. The point was not to find definitive answers to these questions but rather to get the teens thinking about the questions themselves.

Ultimately, my job is not to give them answers to life’s big questions. My job is to equip them to answer these questions for themselves. I’m not trying to tell them what to think. I’m trying to help them learn how to think – or even just getting them to think.

So as always, feel free to listen to the class recording by clicking the link below. Follow along with the presentation notes. And take some time to watch the supplemental videos that I think are helpful to the discussion.

WHO IS GOD?

This week in class we wrestled with questions about the nature of God. One of the most important questions every single person must answer for themselves is “What do I think about God?” In many ways this is the fundamental question of life, for from this one question and our answer to it springs all the other answers to all the other questions. It’s like old time sailors crossing the ocean with a compass. If their compass was off by just a few degrees, they could miss their port by hundreds of miles. If we are off just a bit in our understanding of who God is, we could end up on a path in life that takes us hundreds of miles from our intended destination. So let’s take seriously the task of seeking to know God as revealed in creation, in the Bible, in Jesus, and in the church.

Below you will find the audio recording from our class (discussion portions have been edited down). Then feel free to follow along with the presentation notes and several supplemental videos.

OTHER HELPFUL VIDEOS:

The BIG Questions

This week we looked at the BIG questions that every single one of the 7.5 billion people on the planet must ask and answer for themselves. These are the basic worldview questions. How we answer these questions for ourselves determines what we value and how we behave. These questions/answers are like a lens through which we see everything around us. Listen along to the class audio by clicking the link below. (During the class we had a few different times of discussion. Those have been edited out for the sake of time and listening experience.) Follow along with the presentation notes. And then check out my video at the end where I explain the connection between the BIG worldview questions and the Lord’s Prayer.

THE GOD I DON’T BELIEVE IN | Religion in America

We began a new series last night with the teens called “The God I *Don’t* Believe In.” This fall we will be trying to answer the big questions about God, reality, our place in this world, why things are so broken, what hope there is for the future, and more. For our first couple sessions we will be laying the groundwork for everything to come. We began last night by taking a look at the state of religion in the US. You can click the icon below to listen to an audio recording of our class, and follow along with the presentation notes and videos below.
